PostHeaderIcon Getting an International Driving Permit

So, VT says I need one so that we can drive around Abu Dhabi and Dubai without fear of being hauled into jail, which one of his colleague did eventhough he held a valid Malaysian driver’s license.

I scoured the net for information on how to get it done. There was a description of it, which seemed rather comprehensive on the JPJ site. The key word here is “seemed” in case you missed it. According to the website, it says to bring:

(1) Current Malaysian license, with at least 1 year to expiry

(2) Malaysian Identity Card

(3) Completed application form, which is available from the site

(4) 2 pieces of passport sized photo

(5) RM150

(6) Photocopy of items (1) and (2) only required if someone else is doing the application for you

So, how did JPJ score?

(1) True; and because mine was expiring in Dec 2011, I had to get it renewed first. It was at the same place so it was fuss free.

(2) False; the officer did not ask to see it

(3) True; the form is also available at the office although there was no pen in sight so bring your own!

(4) False; only 1 is required

(5) True; only cash is accepted

(6) False; you need the photocopies of the front and back of both the IC and driver’s license even if applying in person. Good thing was there was the photocopying service right outside the pejabat.

By the way, I went to the JPJ office in Maju Junction. Quiet with very few people. There are 17 counters but only 2 manned at 9:30 am. End-to-end process took slightly over 30mins.

After getting the permit (which is a booklet by the way), I’d realised that UAE wasn’t in the list of countries covered. OOPS!
